December 29, 2020 by TDI Team Leave a Comment

The Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship received over 20 proposals from around the world. The quality of submissions was extremely high, and in April 2020 the Awards Committee was delighted to announce that the successful proposal was submitted by April Ettington of the University of Auckland, New Zealand for her project Do Bryde’s Whales Smell?  This study impressed the committee as it mirrored Lou’s pioneering work in cetacean sensory perception (e.g. his studies of visual acuity and frequency discrimination abilities in the bottlenose dolphin), and his “out of the box” creativity in scientific inquiry.

About TDI Team

The mission of The Dolphin Institute (TDI) is to map-out the sensory skills, cognitive abilities, and communication abilities of dolphins, to describe the behavior and biology of North Pacific humpback whales, and to educate people at all levels about these animals so that they may come to appreciate them and protect their fragile marine habitats.
