About

The Dolphin Institute is dedicated to dolphins and whales through education, research, and conservation.

Our mission is to advance the scientific study of dolphins and of North Pacific humpback whales, and to educate people at all levels about these animals so that they may come to appreciate them and protect their fragile marine habitats.

TDI founders Lou Herman and Adam Pack

The Dolphin Institute (TDI) is a Hawaii-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to dolphins and whales through research, education and conservation.

TDI was formed in 1993 by Dr. Louis M. Herman, Founder and Director of the University of Hawaii’s Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory (KBMML); Dr. Adam A. Pack, Associate Director of KBMML and currently Professor in Psychology and Biology at University of Hawaii at Hilo; and friends from the Hawaii community.
