Today’s the day! Our television documentary “Mystery of the Humpback Whale Song” for the PBS Changing Seas series has its inaugural premier tonight at 8:30 PM in South Florida on WPBT (the Miami PBS station). The program features the joint efforts of Dr. Adam Pack, TDI President and UH Hilo Professor, and Dr. Marc Lammers, Research Coordinator of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Dr. Pack and Dr. Lammers are investigating whether humpback whale male song is an honest indicator of a singer’s fitness and fertility. The program also showcases our collaborative efforts to use acoustic recording suction cup tags to follow the day in the life of a singer as well as whales in other social roles in the breeding grounds. You can view the full program now! Just click this link to the PBS “Changing Seas” series website. Tonight’s broadcast in Miami will also be simulcast on the PBS Changing Seas YouTube channel.
If you would like to help support our joint efforts to understand the functions of humpback whale song, you can make a contribution to this specific project from the DONATE page of our website.
Your charitable gift will help us reach our goal of $5,000 to complete the steroid hormone analysis portion of the project, which examines testosterone levels of singers we have recorded and sized and compares these levels to testosterone in males in other social roles as well as to progesterone levels in females with whom males associate.
Mahalo and we hope you enjoy the documentary!
